Hospice House - Sentara
This new inpatient hospice facility was created to meet the growing needs of the community for respite and end-of-life care. From nursing services and social work to volunteer and bereavement services, it offers the same full range of inpatient hospice services as currently offered in the hospital.
The new 12-bed facility occupies a renovated wing of an assisted living facility and a new addition to become the first inpatient hospice house in South Hampton Roads. The new addition contains 8 beds and the renovated wing contains 4 beds. A large garden area was created to allow family and patients an area of respite to enjoy the outdoors. The project also included site work associated with the addition.
The goal for hospice is to provide compassion, comfort and dignity and to emphasize quality of life for persons and their family so they may live every moment of their life to the fullest. Our design offers large patient rooms full of natural light. Many rooms feature double French doors wide enough to roll a patient’s bed onto the courtyard garden patio. There are two sleeping rooms for family members and pull-out sleep chairs in patient rooms, two quiet rooms for families to gather, a small chapel and large dining room where families can prepare and share meals. Ten of the rooms are designated for inpatients and two for respite care.
The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art Telehealth, a two-way audiovisual system for interacting with the Medical Director when he is unable to be at the patient’s bedside. This system provides guidance and reassurance for every patient and their family.
