JOSEPH H. TROST, AIA, ACHA, NCARB

PRINCIPAL, Board Certified Healthcare Architect

Mr. Trost joined PF&A in 1990 as a project architect and was promoted to Principal in 2001. A graduate of Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Architecture, Mr. Trost has over 36 years of experience in architecture.

A national Architecture design award winner, his experience is diversified with strong emphasis in the healthcare, dental and commercial sectors.

Working across all phases of architectural practice from master planning and design through bidding and construction, Joe has an outstanding record, enhanced by the ability to see a project from concept through to the final product. Joe finds connection with his projects though listening to clients and their user groups to assess their needs
and ways of working. He excels at developing close rapport and fostering collaboration with the entire team, resulting in innovative solutions. His reliability and attention to detail ensures each design is functional and meets the project’s specific and unique needs.

When it comes to designing healthcare spaces, Joe is a real expert! Joe is an American College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA) Board Certified Healthcare Architect.  He is very familiar with the guidelines and regulations of the Joint Commission, NFPA 101, NFPA 99, ADA and Life Safety Code. He is highly proficient with AutoCAD and highly skilled in employing the latest Revit/ BIM modeling tools. 

When he's not at work, Joe enjoys providing community service through the non-profit Samantha Makes It a Little Easier (SMILE), golfing, listening to music, especially Jimmy Buffet and island sounds, and cheering for the Red Sox!

SHARON L. SZALAI, AIA, ACHA, NCARB, LEED AP, SEGD, IIDA

PRINCIPAL, Board Certified Healthcare Architect

Ms. Sharon L. Szalai joined PF&A in 2003 as a Project Architect and was promoted to Principal in 2006. A graduate of Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. in Architecture and minor studies in Interior Architecture including studies abroad at Darmstadt University in Germany, Ms. Szalai has over 30 years of experience in architecture. 

Sharon’s diversified background and project experience provided the springboard to become a national Architecture and Interior Architecture design award winner.  Additionally, Sharon was honored with the “Woman of The Year Award” from Inside Business Magazine for her vision and talent. “My inspiration comes from my clients….their goals are my goals. Together we create inspirational design. My ‘aha’ moments for design solutions simply come while listening to the users, or driving from the office to my house, or as a morning thought when I wake…always ready with a sketchbook nearby.”
 
Creating patient-centered, team-based care models that foster a collaborative work environment is a design goal for every project. The most important quality as a designer is to listen, listen, and listen more…..then to “problem solve” that exceed the clients’ expectations.  Transparency and honesty go a long way. Everyone solves problems differently, bringing their own life experiences to the process.  Problem-solving is never simply one way, black or white; rather, it’s a collaborative, iterative process toward a successful solution.
 
During a project, Sharon takes the client through the steps of design, from schematics through construction.  Planning, feasibility cost analysis and “hands-on” involvement create success! At PF&A, we embrace our dialogue with clients…expressing our ideas in real-time hand-sketches or through virtual reality. Serving clients, the users, and the community through design is the driver of Sharon’s creativity.
 
Away from the office, she spends time sailing, boating, paddle boarding, entertaining…. and enjoying life with her three dogs and many friends!

Sharon has recently earned her Board Certificate in healthcare architecture to become PF&A’s second in-house American College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA) Board Certified Healthcare Architect.

KIMBERLY J. BERNHEIMER, CHID, IIDA, LEED AP ID+C

ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL, AAHID Board Certified Healthcare Interior Designer

A graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, Senior Interior Designer Kim Bernheimer, CID, IIDA, LEED AP ID+C, brings eighteen plus years of experience in interior design and has recently been named Associate Principal. 

As an interior designer, she is professionally trained to create functional and quality interior environments. Ms. Bernheimer’s experience includes creating illustrations and renderings, developing documents and specifications relative to interior spaces in compliance with applicable building and safety codes, and selecting and specifying fixtures, furnishings, products, materials and colors. She is an excellent communicator and has sustained proficiency in Revit/Bim. 

Along with her award winning interior design skills, Ms. Bernheimer has honed her knowledge in the use of complex materials, special equipment coordination/layout and proper spatial configuration. She also serves as project coordinator on multiple projects. 

Kim supports ALS organizations after losing her uncle to the disease, spends time with her kids through sports and music engagements, attends concerts when she can, plays piano, spends time outdoors and roots every year for the Buffalo Bills to finally make it back to the Superbowl for a win!

Kim recently passed the American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers (AAHID) Examination and earned the prestigious CHID Certificate.

LYNNE B. MANNING

ASSOCIATE

Lynne B. Manning joined PF&A as an Associate and is managing PF&A's secondary location in Gloucester, VA. Ms. Manning offers 30 years of professional interior design experience in the institutional, healthcare and corporate markets and holds a B.S. in Interior Design/Textiles from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Prior to joining PF&A, Ms. Manning was associated with several national architectural firms in the capacity of Principal and Director of Interior Design. Ms. Manning has held positions as project designer, project manager and lead designer on numerous projects ranging from small renovation projects to multi-million dollar healthcare projects comprising all new stand-alone construction.

Ms. Manning’s experience includes developing documents and specifications relative to interior spaces in compliance with applicable building and safety codes, and selecting and specifying fixtures, furnishings, products, materials and colors.

Ms. Manning values a collaborative team approach to delivering quality design.

In her spare time, Lynne serves on numerous Boards and committees in the community which support the arts; she gardens, entertains and spends time with family.

SARA A. HEPPE, NCARB, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, CDT

ASSOCIATE

Ms. Heppe joined PF&A in 2015 as a project architect and was promoted to Associate in 2018. A graduate of the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture, Ms. Heppe has over ten years of experience in architecture.

When approaching a project, Ms. Heppe thinks about what a person experiences when they walk through a space. If a space is sculpted to focus on evoking specific emotions from people, such as awe-inspiring, calming, exciting, intimate, freeing, etc., it helps to guide the design process when creating a 3 dimensional collage.

Along with her award winning design skills, Ms. Heppe is fully committed to sustainability and high performance buildings because of their benefits to their owners, their communities, and their environments. Ms. Heppe’s experience encompasses projects for higher education, labs, and a variety of healthcare spaces ranging from inpatient behavioral health to new outpatient facilities.

Sara enjoys spending her free time with her family and friends. Benefiting from living just two blocks from the beach, her family is on the sand or in the water as often as possible! She also has an insatiable appetite for activities such as tennis, running, skiing, hiking, and new experiences.

DAVID J. PERONNET, NCARB, AIA

ASSOCIATE

Mr. Peronnet offers over twenty four years of professional architectural experience and holds several degrees including a Master of Architecture from the University of Houston. Prior to joining PF&A, Mr. Peronnet worked as Assistant Professor of Architecture providing expert instruction in building sciences and design/ build studios at Hampton University.

Mr. Peronnet has a diverse design background that includes graphic design work for major USA companies, design education and publishing, and architectural work that ranges from single family residences, laboratories, liturgical buildings, and healthcare facilities.

His approach to architecture includes a thorough study of engineered systems required for comfort and safety then develops form and space to integrate the technology with occupant experience. His understanding of systems planning provides added value to the healthcare industry with quick resolutions to complex programs.

When he's not at work, David enjoys being outside gardening and going on hikes/backpacking with his wife and sons.
