The Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters needed to accommodate for the growth of their practice and create space for an increased amount of patients. PF&A designed the Oakbrooke office building to house new and existing tenants from a separate CHKD building. The design created 62,000 square feet of new space within a 3-story building. Specific challenges for this project included the potential for a helicopter drop-off site, the movement of a portable MRI trailer on the back side of the building, and space-planning for the many different specialties to be located in the building. Some of these specialties included, physical therapy, sports medicine, and radiology. The building includes many sustainable elements including the use of natural day lighting, water and energy consumption conservation. The building is aesthetically distinguishable by the bands of pink glazing and the two story front entry housing the elevator tower cladded with smiling faces of children from Chesapeake. The artwork and screened murals used have a direct link to the community by using children from the community for the photography. The design goal was to be artful and fun while at the same time utilizing the building space with natural daylight.so to create an exciting and relaxing space for the kids and parents.
