The Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters needed to expand its cafeteria and create a more efficient serving line. The serving line was redesigned to allow for an expanded menu implemented by the café. Guests entering the café have a choice of lines for hot or cold foods. Traffic patterns were simplified to provide separate ingress and egress to the café. PF&A was given theopportunity to design the space to include modern equipment, wayfinding, additional eating space, and a view of the butterfly memorial garden. This view was made possible by utilizing a curved, sloped, glazed addition. With the benefit of the garden view, we were able to incorporate existing designs into the cafe. The café is adjacent to the butterfly memorial wall garden, which honors children who saved or improved the lives of others through the donation of their organs and tissues. The design concept, including the colors of the finishes and furniture, originated from the existing butterfly memorial wall. The butterfly images were incorporated into the serving line as patterns in the floor tile, which transformed from the caterpillar patterns at the entrance of the cafe’. The butterfly images can be seen throughout the entire cafeteria.
