Dental Service Design Guide
The material contained in the Dental Service Design Guide is the culmination of a coordinated effort among the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Veterans Health Administration, the Office of Construction & Facilities
Management, the Strategic Management Office, and the Capital Asset Management, Planning Service Group, PF&A Design and HDR, Inc..
The goal of the Design Guide is to maximize the efficiency of the design process for VA facilities and ensure a high level of design, while controlling construction and operating costs. PF&A provided services to revise and update the current versions of PG 18-9 Space Planning Criteria, PG 18-5 Equipment Guide List and create a new Design Guide PG 18-12 Design Guides for Chapter 222 - Dental Service.
PF&A worked closely with HDR for preparation of the Space Planning Criteria and Equipment Guide List portion of the project. PF&A provided all services in-house for the development of one new PG 18-12 Design Guide for the revised/updated Chapter 222 - Dental Service. The design guide provides in-depth information for a selected number of rooms/spaces in the chapter(s), and is aimed at providing preliminary detailed information to an A/E developing a construction project for a VA Medical Center (VAMC) or an Outpatient Clinic containing a component of the chapters.
The scope included revising and updating all components of Chapter 222: Dental Service, developing new additional components not currently in the existing document, including, but not limited to general, functional, technical and safety considerations, functional diagrams, design plates, 3D axonometric views, floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, interior elevations, details, design standards, and room content lists.
We conducted multiple multi-state site visits with VA Specialty Advisors for this chapter to elicit their input. Our work also included revising and updating PG 18-9 Space Planning Criteria work based on current VA Policies and Directives, latest trends of medical and scientific research and latest industry trends and all applicable guidelines for this building type.
The final document includes list of rooms/spaces organized by functional areas and Input Data Questions so that the resulting space criteria can be implemented in the Master Space Criteria Manager of the Space and Equipment Planning System (SEPS). PG 18-5 Equipment Guide List work included the updating of content assignments i.e. furniture list and medical equipment and furnishings for each Room Code. The content was implemented in the Final deliverables including an Executive Summary presenting project process overview, major design issues, critical elements and how the VA Space Planning Criteria Chapters and Equipment Guide Lists and VA DG support the enhancement of healthcare delivery. All work was based on current VA Policies and Directives, latest trends of medical and scientific research and latest industry trends and all applicable guidelines for this building type.
The Veterans Health Administration is the largest integrated health care system in the United States, providing care at 1,243 health care facilities, including 170 VA Medical Centers and 1,063 outpatient sites of care of varying complexity (VHA outpatient clinics), serving more than 9 million enrolled Veterans each year.
